Is PT-141 effective for women?
Yes. PT-141 was FDA-approved specifically for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women (as Vyleesi). It works by activating melanocortin receptors in the brain governing arousal and desire. Clinical trials demonstrated meaningful improvements in desire and arousal.
Is PT-141 the same as Vyleesi?
Yes. Vyleesi is the brand name for bremelanotide (PT-141), approved by the FDA in 2019 for HSDD in premenopausal women. When we prescribe PT-141 at YoungerMeMD, we use compounded bremelanotide that is pharmaceutically equivalent but available at a fraction of the cost of brand-name Vyleesi.
How is PT-141 different from Viagra or Cialis?
Viagra and Cialis are vasodilators that increase blood flow to the genitals, whereas PT-141 works upstream in the brain through the melanocortin pathway to affect desire itself, not just physical arousal.
How often can I take PT-141?
PT-141 should not be used more than once in a 24-hour period. For women, the FDA recommends no more than 8 doses per month. PT-141 is not designed for daily use — it's used when you want its effects for a specific occasion.
How is PT-141 administered?
It is given as a small subcutaneous injection, typically into areas with fat deposits such as the lower abdomen or thigh. Patients receive instruction at the office and can then keep the medication at home.
